Story
What is our fundraiser?
We are planning to complete a sponsored 50 mile cycle ride to help raise much needed funds for Caitlins surgery.
Be under no illusion, most of us have not cycled since our teens, some of us have our own health complaints and we are not kitted out with high spec road bikes! We are determined to train and make our way around a challenging 50 mile Norfolk route in order to help support Caitlin & her family.
Why - what’s Caitlin's story?
6 months ago Caitlin was diagnosed with idiopathic Scoliosis, curvature of the spine. In Dec 2019 it was confirmed that Caitlin's scoliosis was severe and that she would need surgery on her spine.
She has a Double S curve; effectively pushing the top half of her back over to the right & the bottom half over to the left. Her spine has started to rotate & both curves are at 65 degrees.
What happens if she doesn’t have surgery?
Her curvature will get much much worse; so bad that it will start to crush her internal organs, which will not end nicely.
The NHS option is a metal rod & spinal fusion. This method will result in Caitlin being in pain and only being able to bend at the knees & hip, having to pick things up off the floor with a “grabber stick” at 17!!! The metal will also deteriorate & corrode over time, which in itself can have life limiting effects.
We are desperately raising funds for an amazing alternative treatment called non-fusion Anterior Scoliosis Correction (ASC). This method uses flexible rods & will allow her to retain her flexibility & movement, whilst
straightening her back over time.
Caitlin is desperately running out of time; the longer she waits the worse her back will get. There is only a very short window of opportunity here.
Caitlin’s surgery should be taking place in Barcelona, at the cost of £75k.
However due to the impact of Covid19, her surgeon now might not be able to perform the surgery in Europe. This will involve travel to the USA & the surgery alone has a much more hefty price tag of £165k.
Caitlin’s mum, Lee, teaches at the local infant school. All our children went to the school and we feel that Lee helped shape our children’s lives and always had their backs. Now we can return the favour and help Caitlin.
Please please please help us to raise funds towards this vital surgery to ensure in years to come this beautiful young girl, Caitlin can continue to keep her flexibility and do all the things she wants to!
HUGE thankyou in advance, even the smallest amounts all add up.
