Most people have heard Tilly’s story but for those who haven’t a little history.
Tilly was born a perfectly healthy little girl, everything was great until 3 days old when the midwife was concerned about her level of jaundice. We were admitted to Derby Hospital where she underwent 5 days of detailed tests. We left when she was a week old and was told to expect a follow up appointment at Birmingham Children’s Hospital in the coming weeks. We were called to Birmingham 5 days after that where Tilly underwent more blood tests and scans. When she was 15 days old we were told she had Biliary Atresia, a childhood liver disease where there is a blockage in the bile ducts meaning the bile stays in the liver rather than draining as it should.
Tilly had a Kasai procedure at 18 days old in the hope it would restore the bile flow and save her liver. All seemed to be going great, bloods were heading in the right direction until she was 3 months old and her levels wouldn’t settle. She was admitted once more this time for 4 weeks of iv antibiotics to no avail, her liver was too damaged. She was subsequently listed for a liver transplant at 4 months old.
The wait for ‘the call’ was incredibly difficult, watching Tilly deteriorate daily was the hardest but thankfully on the 23rd February 2014 we received the fourth call for a potential donor. It went ahead and we’ve never looked back. Tilly has gone from strength to strength, loves life and particularly school. All of which would not be possible if it wasn’t for a very special family, Tilly’s donor family. Always in our thoughts, especially at times like this, we went through days when we thought we wouldn’t be able to share special events with Tilly but her liver is one of the best gifts we could have received as a family.
Throughout Tilly’s life we have received the continued support from CLDF who provide information to us as parents, Tilly’s nursery and now her school. They offer summer camps which Tilly will certainly be taking advantage of when she’s older together with family support days where we can meet other families in a similar position. A lot of their money raised goes into research into childhood liver disease meaning one day someone may not have to go through what Tilly did.
It was Paul’s crazy idea to cycle to our wedding as it coincides with CLDF’s national fundraising day ‘Big Yellow Friday’ on the 2nd March 2018. Luckily he’s not alone and Tilly’s also crazy uncles, Nick, George and Kevin offered to cycle with him.
Please help us raise funds for this amazing charity and suppport Tilly’s crazy family!
Thank you xx
