Story
The coming months are set to be tough and COVID-19 will hit people affected by dementia the hardest. On a personal level, I know first hand the impact Alzheimer's dementia has on the person and the family. Having witnessed my grandfather suffer from this, to the point I struggled to be in the same room or to physically see him. This was due to the drastic decline in his physical and mental health, as the dementia took over and left him a shell of the man he once was.
Professionally, I am a team leader working in a residential care setting for adults with intellectual disabilities and behaviours that may challenge. In the home I work in, we care, love and support individuals of qdiffering ages with a spectrum of comorbid conditions; among those conditions is dementia.
I am not an avid cyclist by any means and I know this will be a challenge as I swop my car for more of my bike. Nevertheless, I have decided to take on this challenge and cycle 250 miles, to raise much needed funds in the fight against alzheimer's, that may some point help those like my grandfather and those I care for in the future!
