Story
Every year CUAI stages the Cage Protest on King's lawn where members spend 48 hours manning the petition stall and huddling behind bars. Legend has it the cage has been running for 40 years. From one angle, that’s something to be proud of. From another, it illustrates just how long many injustices still drag out.
This year our theme is 'Stop Torture', a cause that Amnesty International has long campaigned on. We believe that torture is ineffective, it is morally abhorrent, and that we should not want to live in a society that says such cruelty and violence is sometimes justifiable.
In particular, we are calling on Theresa May to condemn Donald Trump's endorsement of torture. In January he said "Torture works. Okay, folks? You know, I have these guys – ‘torture doesn’t work!’ – believe me, it works. And waterboarding is your minor form. Some people say it’s not actually torture. Let’s assume it is. But they asked me the question: what do you think of waterboarding? Absolutely fine. But we should go much stronger than waterboarding."
Yet Theresa May has said nothing. We firmly believe that as our Prime Minister she should stand up for what is right, and speak out against Trump's comments.
If you are in Cambridge this weekend, please do come down to King's Parade and add your voice to our petition! We'll be there between 17:00 on Friday 24th February and 17:00 on Sunday 26th.
We are raising money for Amnesty International because they are a movement that proudly stands up and defends those who are the victims of torture.
Thank you for visiting our page and please donate to help Amnesty International stand up for humanity and human rights around the world.
