Story

We are taking part in the #59events for The MPS Society to
help raise awareness of MPS, Fabry and other related diseases. These diseases are rare genetic diseases which can cause a range of issues throughout a person’s lifetime. Sadly, two of our club members from Castleford Rugby Union Football Club - Andrew Gill (my father) and David Camfield - passed away due to Fabry. Peter, David’s brother, lives with the condition, and he is buoyed by our fundraising endeavours.

In order to honour our club members and continue to raise awareness of this disease, we will be embarking upon the first of three cycling events: a 75km ride to neighbouring rugby clubs Pontefract, Hemsworth, Knottingley and Selby on Sunday 10th April 2022. There will also be a 150km summer ride (date tbc) and a 200km+ ride in 2023.

Many of us – myself included – are fairly new to the sport
of cycling. We can be best described as a group of novices, riding purely for a great cause. Some members have even bought bikes especially for the occasion or borrowed them from friends; others have volunteered to offer mechanical support, on standby in vehicles. We have never ridden together, until now…

But, as a team, we will cross the finish line to honour our
club members and help to support the wider Fabry and MPS community through our fundraising. Thank you for your support. It means a lot!

Steve

PS. Paul Connell will be doing his 75km in New Zealand, as
this is where he currently lives.
