Story
I will be raising money for the Helen Bamber Foundation who provide care & protection to survivors of some of the gravest human rights violations, including people trafficking and torture. Often directly affected by conflict, the livelihoods of the survivors that the HBF supports are typically dangerous, unstable and affected by high risks of poverty, ill health and trauma. The Helen Bamber Foundation provides practical, psychological and legal assistance, focusing on early intervention, effective medical assessment and therapies. The objective of this support is to provide survivors with the support, skills and resilience to rebuild their lives.
My first challenge will be ‘Living below the Breadline’
which involves living on just £5’s worth of food for 5 days. I will begin this challenge on the 6th of November and will not be able to accept gifts or use any food items I have bought before the week begins. The purpose of this challenge is to raise awareness of the difficulties many face when living in poverty – hunger being just one of them. For the 1.4 billion people who live on less than £1 a day, this amount must cover all their living expenses, while also possibly dealing with violence, homelessness, disease and war. Those supported by the Helen Bamber Foundation may have experienced extreme deprivation or are at a much higher risk of living below the poverty line and so this challenge is a pertinent reminder of the struggles many individuals face.
