A year and a half ago I drunkenly and pointlessly agreed not to shave my chin until we deliver the next phase of this project. Delivery is fast approaching, so now I’m shaving my beard off to raise money in support of my pal Geraldine, whose daughter Niamh has Eythlmalonic Encephalopathy... a rare, incurable, life limiting genetic condition.
When I heard Niamh’s story I had to do something to support it… there are only 40 clinical studies (worldwide) of this condition, which affects Niamh's physical and mental development. The reality of this condition is tough; Niamh needs daily physical, feeding and hygiene support. Niamh can’t walk or talk, but you certainly can’t tell this from her achievements... Niamh’s on the school council, she represents her school at the mayor's office, she charms everyone with her infectious smile, and has a serious love for Peppa Pig (thoughts with you Geraldine!) but my favourite - she loves laughing when people fall over! lol
When Geraldine tells me of the care and support for Niamh, I don't hear my quiet, hardworking reliable admin pal in work… I hear a hero. I’m moved to tears of pride by her love, relentless positivity and happy stories of a beautiful young person. Geraldine, you’re an unsung hero and a true inspiration. I mean that from the bottom of my heart. I’m proud to know you and you’re such a positive impact on everyone.
It is estimated that 1 in 25 children are affected by a genetic disorder, meaning more than 30,000 babies and children are newly diagnosed each year. The topic is wide and covers a range of diagnosed disorders. Genetic Disorders UK is run by a small team that seeks to be the leading source of support and info for those affected, including charities and patient groups. The website is really eye opening and informative. Please check it out.
Speaking of websites… While we’ve been counting the days to project launch, my girlfriend has been counting the days to this beard coming off. I think she thought it was funny til about a year ago. TBH I don’t know what her problem is. Pamela, you need to chill out. I look badass AF
Please join me in raising awareness and a bit of cash for a wonderful cause. It really would mean a lot. Anything you can spare would be warmly appreciated.
Thanks team, Craig
