I gave birth to twin boys Connor & Matthew on the 24 August 2010 @ 29weeks and 5days, leaving them 10weeks premature. On the 23 August I had a standard pregnancy doc app and went into her telling her that i didn't feel good and thought i was having braxton hicks practice contractions, she examined me and sent me to Daisy Hill.
So I needed to first drop my 2 daughters off with my sister to babysit for me as i didn't know how long it would take, so sat there for and hour having a cuppa tea,and complaining then proceeded onto daisy hill, told the kids i would be back for them in a couple of hours. Ha little did i know it would be a week!
I got to daisy hill, was poked and prodded at for about an hour and than was told i was 2cm dilated and was going to have to be sent to Craigavon hospital to see if they could stop my labour from progressing any further.
So off I went to Craigavan via ambulance , which actually made to whole thing a bit scarier as then it hit me what was actually happening here. Was then examined further in labour suite and given drugs for hours, then it came to the stage where my waters broke and i had to be rushed in for a crash c-section, as it was too dangerous to deliver naturally as Connor was lying sideways across my tummy. At this stage it was 11:45pm and of course im then in a pickle worrying that the twins would be born a day apart from each other! So thankfully it took a bit of time for them to prep. me for the surgery and the boys were born @ 00:12 and 00:14am weighting 3lb 15oz and 4ld 1oz.
They were then rushed into the ICU and were given lots of care and attention, they remained in ICU for a week, we never got to hold them till about the 3rd day, It was to most wonderful experience i have ever had. I was so afraid they wouldn't make it and i had everybody praying to god for them. So when they were a week old the were then transferred into the neo-natal room next door to ICU were they were in incubator for a few days then they got to move into cots with the heated mattresses and had wee monitors on their chests to monitor their breathing because every so often they would get lazy and forget they were not still in my womb and stop breathing, my god i found that very scary!
They were in Craigavon for 2 weeks then we finally got 2 cots in Daisy Hill, which was great because we only live 10mils form it and it meant i could send more time with my boys. They stayed in Daisy hill for 2 weeks and then came home when they were 4weeks old.
During their hospital stay i breast fed the boys using hospital pumps while i was visiting and i hired a Tinylife breast pump for home use , this meant i could use a professional pump in the comfort of my own home and give the boys the best chance of survival i could. being able to breast feed made me feel useful as their mother as i wasn't around them as often as i wanted to be and it made me feel good to know that i was helping to keep them alive and recover faster so that they would develop normally. Thanks to Tiny life who made this possible and it was only a small fee they required for this service as they needed it to be able to purchase more breast pumps and service the one's they had.
The boys are now 8months old and are doing very well , they are always happy and smiling and laughing when they see there 2 bigger sisters heading there way for a mess!!
I would like to say thanks you to all the people that were involved with me during and after the twins were born a VERY BIG THANKYOU for all your help and support. xx
