Story

Ciarán Murphy passed away from Cystic Fibrosis (CF) on 4th July 2014 while waiting on a double lung transplant. He lived his life with determination, courage and dignity. In Ciaran's own words "CF never defined me as a person, I am more than that. I am Ciarán Murphy, the man who has a life, not Ciarán Murphy who has Cystic Fibrosis".  He certainly lived his life to the full and always with a smile no matter what challenges CF threw in his way.

In 2009 Ciarán had a successful double lung transplant and for the next 4 years he lived the life he dreamed of. He was able to do things that previously CF had delayed him doing like getting a full time job, marrying his beloved Catriona and going back to university to complete his Irish degree.  After his transplant he also became a strong advocate for the life changing impact of organ donation. He said that "the decision to donate an organ I feel is the most humane thing a person can do...what matters is that when in the darkest hour of someone's life they had enough love left to become  a hero and shine a light back into mine".

Unfortunately Ciarán went into chronic rejection in August 2013 and thus ensued a long and courageous battle after he was placed back on the transplant list in January 2014. Cruelly he became too ill to go through the transplant before a donor could be found, leaving his family and friends absolutely devastated and heart broken. Ciarán didn't want to die, he had so much more to live for and we his family will ensure his legacy lives on in many many ways.

Since then we have raised more than £16,500 through Just Giving and his family have encouraged everyone to have the conversation with loved ones about organ donation and lobbied for an opt out system in this part of the world.  We now have a new just giving page for a new series of fundraising - including the annual FEAR race in Fermanagh. An endurance challenge involving cycling, canoe paddling and running. The latter includes a near vertical 304 metres climb up and down Magho Cliff! FEAR includes an award in Ciaran’s memory  link here https://fearmanagh.com/

For FEAR 2023 - we have a bigger and younger “Ciaran’s Flyers” team made up of Ciarán’s family and friends and we’ll introduce them to you all before the event on 30th September. We’ll also introduce Ciaran’s cousin Lauren and partner Neil taking part in the Enniskillen Spooktacular on 25th October.
