The orangutan is on course for distinction in less than a decade due to the massive acceleration in rainforest destruction for wood harvest and palm oil plantations.
The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation aims to save the orangutan and its rainforest habitat. It runs the largest primate rescue project in the world, with nearly 1000 orangutans in its care. You may have seen its work in the 2 series of Orangutan Diaries shown on the BBC.
