Story
Rewind to 11th October 2020. A team of five friends completed the entirety of the 83-mile Norfolk coastal path in one gruelling, continuous 36 hour walk! In our broken state, despite raising over £5.5k for Norfolk Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), we all vowed to NEVER do anything as foolish and challenging again!!
In December 2021 group captain (Martin Church) and his wife faced the extreme premature arrival of their daughter Mabel born at only 26 weeks weighing a mere 820 grams! The NNUH NICU team went above and beyond to stabilise and strengthen Mabel whilst also offering invaluable support to Mum and Dad for nearly 3 months before being released home! The NNUH charity also has special significance to Matt's family following the support from NICU upon the 5-week premature arrival of his eldest daughter Rosa in 2014. She remained in hospital under NICU care for 2 weeks with the first 3 days in the high dependency unit.
The latest incredible and inspirational endeavours from the NICU team have resulted in Martin and lifelong friend Matt Dyke eating their words!
On Thu 6th Apr 2023 Martin and Matt will be confronting Wainwrights Coast to Coast path which is 190 (ONE-HUNDRED AND NINETY) miles long! The route starts from the Irish Sea in St Bees and concludes at the North Sea in Robin Hood's Bay. It has extremely difficult terrains passing through three National Parks (Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors). The overall ascent (6995m / 22,825ft) is more than double the ascent from Mount Everest base camp to the summit! Typically, experienced walkers tackle the route in a minimum of 14 days. In the spirit of fundraising, and to maximise the sponsoring-worthiness, we shall be putting our bodies through absolute torture with the aim of completing in 5 days with 15hrs+ of walking per day!!
The duo and their support network of friends (special thanks to Colm McGilway and Thomas Hubbard), family plus ‘Up And Running Treatments’ (enormous thanks to Sally Ling and Lisa Payne) will all be dedicating huge time and effort to ensure the duo can not only survive the brutality of the endurance walk but ultimately raise funds for NNUH NICU. Our end goal is to make a contribution to the ward to aid their efforts in creating many future success stories similar to Mabel’s!
We hope you can help us achieve our target of £5,750.00 which represents £500.00 per week for the 11.5 weeks that NICU cared for Mabel!
Thank you for your support.
