Story
Suicide claims a life every 90 minutes in the UK, and three quarters of all victims are male - in fact it is the biggest killer of men aged under 45. CALM helps to raise awareness of this epidemic, to start conversations on important topics such as masculinity, and to provide men in crisis with a place where they can talk through their problems. Its helpline averages 5000 calls every month, and its work is estimated to prevent over 250 deaths by suicide each year.
To help CALM in carrying on its important work - and because we fancied an adventure - we (Dan and Dave) are planning to spend this August bank holiday weekend walking 85+ miles from coast to coast, starting in the east where the River Tyne enters the North Sea and walking along the Hadrian's Wall Path to the Irish Sea at Bowness-on-Solway. It's an ambitious aim but fortunately we are impervious to blisters and have deceptively good knees for men on the wrong side of 35.
It costs £1200 to run the CALM helpline for an evening, allowing the excellent team there to take nearly 200 calls, so we have set this as our fundraising aim although we would love to raise even more. A donation of just £7 pays for one call, which could help save a life. £23 pays for someone to take calls for a full hour. But whatever you can give, we would be very grateful and you will be helping to make a difference.
Thanks for your support - it promises to be a unique three days!
