Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hi everyone!

I am running both the Brighton and London marathons this
year to support the essential work that Alzheimers Research UK carries out in
raising awareness of dementia and raising funding to support research for
treatments to help cure or even prevent the diseases leading to dementia.

Brighton is in September and the London Marathon is the
first weekend in October. I will be training hard to ensure I am fit and ready
to finish both marathons later in the year and will be posting regular updates
of my progress – and no doubt of plenty of pain and discomfort!! It will be
worth it though and I will be motivated by the fact that I am supporting a very
good cause and that you will all be supporting and motivating me as we go!

This cause is a particularly relevant and sensitive one for
me as this is a disease that has impacted my family. My two sister-in-laws are
both in their 40s and have dementia symptoms caused by a genetic illness. I
have seen how difficult this is not only for those with the disease but also
the impact it has on the family and friends, and the emotional stress it causes
for all concerned when required to watch a child or sister develop and live
with dementia and the mental and physical deterioration this can cause. More
than 42,000 of the 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK today, are
under 65
, some considerably so and it isn’t always easy to diagnose a
specific illness as we have found and that delay can have a significant impact
on any action that can be taken to slow progress.

There is also no known cure for this and other causes of
dementia and limited options for even trial drugs to help to slow the
development of dementia symptoms.

In fact, in 2018 Dementia was the leading
cause for death in women and second leading cause for death in men in the UK
but is the only condition in the top 10 causes of death in the UK without a treatment to prevent, cure or slow its
progression
.

The estimated cost of developing a new drug is £1.15 billion
and ARUK aims to support the raising of funds to support this research. My goal
is to raise awareness of the disease and of ARUK and to hopefully raise some
money to support the valuable work that ARUK are doing.

This has been a difficult year for all charities and
although we have all had our own challenges this year I am sure, please support
me to help this charity to maybe, just maybe prevent, cure or even just slow
this disease. It doesn’t need to be a lot – only what you can afford or want to
donate but I have no doubt that whatever we can raise together is desperately needed.

Hence my willingness to run not just one, but two marathons
and to overcome my aversion to social media and other ways of communicating and
getting the message out there.

Thanks in advance for your help and for your support – I
will be keeping in touch

Thanks
