Story
My family has been affected by Dementia in one form or another for a long time. Most recently and closest to us is my grandmother Antonia who suffered a stroke many years ago which led to vascular dementia and she has been slowly deteriorating ever since.
As anyone who has seen a loved one or friend suffer this illness, it has a rippling affect on those around them. To watch them lose the memories they have spent a lifetime building is truly one of the saddest parts, especially in the early stages for them, when they have an understanding about what is happening. Thankfully now Antonia is happy being cared for by the kindest and most wonderful team of experts at Alderwood Care Home in Colchester and seems quite happy in this little world of her own. It doesn't always ease the sadness my mother feels when she knows her own mum, no longer knows who she is or shares any of the memories they made together but we are eternally grateful that she is in such good hands.
Antonia is one of the most generous people I've ever known, now mostly with her smiles, and seemingly good humour despite everything. I know she would appreciate any support from friends and family to the charity that also worked with her brother who sadly lost his life to this disease many years ago. His brain was kindly donated to help in the ongoing research to find a cure.
I'm walking with my family in memory of those lost and of those suffering, to try to help in some very small way. Your donations will be gratefully received.
Thank you so much,
Clare
