I had bit of a traumatic start to 2017. There were various things that got me through the dark times – getting out for walks in the countryside, some therapy, lots of exercise, the simple passing of time, but mainly the support of friends and family.
Now that I am feeling a lot better, I still run quite a lot to help me feel good and as time to think through anything that is bothering me. So, when Faye invited me to do a run with her in San Sebastian, I was keen. We’re headed there in late November, and I’ll be running a half marathon.
I’ve decided to raise for a charity in North London that provides services to women – all of whom have been through far worse trauma than mine. Many are displaced from their homes, are victims of rape or domestic abuse. They don’t have the support network around them that was so crucial to me when I most needed it.
I’ve been running thirteen miles a bit recently, so this isn’t about achieving a distance. Nor am I aiming for a particular time. I’m just lucky enough to be headed away on holiday to have a run with friends, and I thought I’d see if I could pay forward some of the kindness that I have received.
