In the Summer of 2010 I was diagnosed with cancer, I was only 38. It was totally unexpected as until that point in my life I had eaten healthily and always exercised, in particular cycling everywhere. It was of course a life changing experience, I had to have a full hysterectomy, come to terms with never having children of my own, go through an early menopause and I of course was frightened it would become more severe and life threatening - remember Jade Goody? Luckily the operation I had was successful. I still have to have CT scans every year and I have to take medication for the rest of my life. I do however consider myself extremely lucky. I didn't relish being inactive whilst recovering from my operation as it is just not me and sincetime have focussed on getting back to 'how I was', losing any weight I had gained whilst recovering and becoming fit again. Although I have been fit, I have NEVER been a runner or in fact enjoyed running and I would have to stay I still find it a chore!! However I want the challenge to do this and I want to raise money for Cancer Research, a cause close to my heart. I don't know for sure but I imagine if it wasn't for Cancer Research, the surgery I had and the medication I now take may not be available and I may not be here now.
I have recently joined the York Group of Friends who are dedicated to raising money for Cancer Research. We are always looking for volunteers to either join the group, help out with events when time permits or donate raffle/tombola prizes. If you are in a position to help out at all, please let me know.
