On Friday 12th May, I am taking on an epic challenge to cross Dartmoor, north to south, in one day. The 50km+ walk/run will see me on my feet for more than 12 hours in support of the Walk for Plunkett campaign, which is raising much-needed funds for the Plunkett Foundation.
I have seen first-hand the difference that Plunkett support can make to rural communities, and local people, by enabling them to set up businesses that are truly owned and run democratically by the local community. From pubs that are the beating heart of the community, to shops ensuring everyone has access to fresh, local food at an affordable price, these community-owned businesses play a vitally important role in rural life. Not only do they offer vital facilities and services, they also creating safe and welcoming spaces for all - tackling loneliness and isolation, providing access to employment, training and volunteering opportunities, and protecting the most vulnerable residents in a community.
Community businesses are lifelines to so many, yet in the current economic environment, with increasing operating costs it's estimated that 1 in 5 community businesses are vulnerable as a result of the financial pressures they face. Funds raised through the Walk for Plunkett campaign will ensure Plunkett can continue to offer free advice, guidance and support to both new and existing community businesses. Every penny helps - and any donation you are able to make will be gratefully received!
Thanks - and wish me luck!
