On the 23 March I will be taking part in a charity skydive on behalf of the Cardiomyopathy Association and in memory of my Dad.

 

Some of you may know that I lost my Dad to cardiomyopathy in February 2010. He was 60 years old and had suffered with dilated cardiomyopathy for ten years. For many of those years he led a normal life, however in 2007 he had to have a pacemaker and implantable cardioverter defibrillator fitted and that is when he was put in touch with the Cardiomyopathy Association.

The Cardiomyopathy Association is a charity that provides information and support to families affected by the heart muscle disease cardiomyopathy. Their services include a team of cardiomyopathy support nurses, information days around the country, support groups and a network of affected volunteers who provide support to others.They also support clinical care by funding specialist nurses posts in different parts of the UK and they also provide cardiomyopathy medical conferences for doctors and nurses.

The CMA is the only UK charity dedicated to providing support and information to families affected by cardiomyopathy and they receive no government funding. It costs £480,000 each year to provide their services and they need your support to help them to continue providing these free services to help families affected by cardiomyopathy.

Cardiomyopathy is close to a few of my friends hearts (no pun intended!) Nicola was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy in 2004 after the birth of her daughter Holly. She was diagnosed with this condition after going into cardiac arrest and having to be resuscitated. Also, Anita sadly lost her father to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy when she was just 5 years old. Marion’s daughter was born with congenital heart disease and had to undergo lifesaving surgery at the age of 4, so we have all been affected by heart disease.
