Story
Hi and thank you for taking the time
to visit my page.
I've signed up to run in the Big Fun Run 2015 in Edinburgh on Sunday 11th
October 2015.
I’m Claire, I'm 37 years old and suffer from Fibromyalgia, PCOS and Sleep
Apnoea (to name but a few of my problems ~lol~) but what I suffer is nothing to
what my brother, Mark, and everyone else diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy
faces and suffers though on a daily basis.
The muscular dystrophies are a group of genetic disorders, which cause muscle
weakness. There is currently no cure. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a serious
condition that causes progressive muscle weakness. In Duchenne muscular
dystrophy muscle fibres break down and are replaced by fibrous and or fatty
tissue causing the muscle to gradually weaken. Becker generally
progresses at a slower pace. Mark was originally diagnosed with Duchennes but
this was later changed to Becker Muscular Dystrophy.
5K may not seem like very much compared to half marathons and full marathons but
for me, it’s huge. I spent 7 years with a diagnosis of Lupus during which time
I collapsed, was unable to walk then later walked with crutches or a walking
stick. This diagnosis was later changed to Fibromyalgia which also, when in a
flare up, causes me pain with walking. But this is something I’ve always wanted
to do, for myself and my brother!
Thank you for any you can give to this more than worthy cause and if you’d like
to learn more or get involved please head over to www.musculardystrophyuk.org.
