Story
Hi guys, thank you for taking the time to look at my fundraising page.
Running a marathon has been a personal goal of mine for a while now, and reaching the finish line will be one of my proudest moments. The 26.2 miles will be psychologically and physically challenging but a lot of training is needed to even get me to the start line!
Whilst I am doing this marathon for my own personal acheivement, I am also taking the opportunity to raise money for a charity that I feel do invaluable work. As a social worker, I work with many people with a diagnosis of dementia along with their family and friends.
Dementia is terminal and there is no cure. One in three people over 65 will die with dementia. The Alzheimers Society supports people to live well with dementia today and funds research to find a cure for tomorrow. Information, advice along with emotional and practical support is offered by the Alzheimers Society to people with a diagnosis of dementia, their family and friends.
The carers of people with dementia are often family and friends. As the disease progresses, these informal carers can be providing as much as 24/7 support to their loved one. In some cases, without this level of support, the individual with dementia may need to be in residential care. Whilst local authorities can provide practical support in the way of assessments and formal care, family and friends are still often providing a substantial amount of the care.
Yes running 26.2 miles will cause pain and discomfort, but that is nothing compared to the daily struggles people can suffer as a result of dementia.
Please see the Alzheimers Society website for more info on the work they do.
I would really appreciate it if people could donate as much as they are able to, whether that be £1, £5, £10 or more :)
Let the training and fundraising begin!
