Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As most of you now know, in September of last year my dad was diagnosed with Myeloma which is a cancer arising from your plasma cells, a blood cancer.
Myeloma is incurable but thankfully highly treatable. It is exceptionally rare, accounting for only 2% of all cancers.
It is a relapsing-remitting cancer which means that the patient goes through cycles of chemotherapy, hopefully goes into remission and the patient will then stay there for either a few months or a few years before the cancer ‘returns’ at which point they need to go through the chemotherapy cycle once again.
Because Myeloma is so rare, the charity, Myeloma UK does not get as much support as other cancer charities albeit they are all of course worthy. After finding out about dad I couldn’t sleep for the first few nights and spent hours pouring over the Myeloma UK website absorbing and learning as much as I could. The charity is a huge support to patients and their families as are the Northern Cancer Centre at the Freeman who have been simply phenomenal.
I want to give something back to this amazing charity who do so much to research this disease and whose work means people like my Dad hopefully have many more years left on this earth.
So I’m running the great north run 🙈
I’ll also be holding some other fundraising events throughout the year to try and reach my target of £2,100 as it is the charity’s 21st anniversary this year so that seemed like a fitting target!
