This year I am going to walk the 4 highest peaks in the Lake District (Skiddaw, Helvellyn, Scafell and Scafell Pike) in daylight hours on 14 July 2018 - 16 hours of walking, 24 miles and 10,000ftof climb (and descent).
A real challenge!
I had not intended to do this to fundraise, merely to test my body and enjoy walks on the mountains. However in January this year I was dismayed to find out that not 1, but 2 of my Soroptimist friends had been diagnosed with brain tumours.
Yesterday I said “good night“ to my friend, Diana, and today she died.
Our 2018 President’s charity at SI Cockermouth and District is Brain Tumour Research so I have decided to also raise money to help support their work .
Brain tumours are indiscriminate; they can affect anyone at any age. What’s more, they kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer... yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease.
They are the only national charity in the UK that is dedicated to raising funds for continuous and sustainable scientific research into brain tumours and they are a leading voice calling for greater support and action for research into what scientists are calling the last battleground against cancer.
