Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My grandma passed away a few years ago now, but I lost her long before that. She developed Alzheimer’s when I was about 12. At first we used to laugh at the things she forgot and phrases she’d often repeat, but then it became more serious and she finally had to move into an Alzheimer’s hospice. After a while she forgot who we were and eventually she was unable to talk to us anymore. She went from a rosy-cheeked, jolly, plump and cuddly Grandma to a thin and gaunt Grandma, a shadow of her former self.
I am carrying out this walk in memory of my Grandma and for my Nanna, who has also now developed dementia. I have completed the Yorkshire 3-peaks walk previously, but this time it has more meaning to me because my Grandma and my Nanna will be with me, every step of the way.
One of the best memories I have of my Grandma is her teaching me how to make paper boats from opal fruit wrappers (as they were then!). As part of my memory walk I will take a packet of opal fruits (Starburst - sorry Grandma!) with me and shall make a paper boat at the top of each peak and sit it on the trig point. Not being a litter bug – I will remove the boat, but not before taking a photograph, so that I have a memory of the occasion!
I have come to realise that Alzheimer’s and Dementia affects so many families – nearly everyone I know has a family member who has been or currently is affected by the illness. Hopefully the money I will raise will help towards improving the lives of current sufferers and assist with vital research and understanding of the causes, possible cures or future prevention.
Please donate as much as you are able to, every £1 will count, and I will be most grateful to every single one of you!
Thank you!
Claire and my memory team - Evelyn (My Grandma) and Betty (My Nanna)
