Story
Ciarán passed away from Cystic Fibrosis on 4th July 2014 after a long battle fought with sheer determination, courage and dignity. In Ciaran's own words "CF never defined me as a person, I am more than that. I am Ciarán Murphy, the man who has a life, not Ciarán Murphy who has Cystic Fibrosis". And he certainly lived his life to the full and always with a smile no matter what challenges CF through in his way.
In 2009 Ciarán had a successful double lung transplant and for the next 4 years he lived the life he dreamed of, he was able to do things that previously CF had delayed him doing like getting a full time job, going back to university to complete his Irish degree and more or less a year to the day of his transplant he completed the final leg of Belfast City Marathon. After his transplant he also became a loud voice and advocate for organ donation he very openly and humbly stated that "the decision to donate an organ I feel is the most humane thing a person can do...what matters is that when in the darkest hour of someone's life they had enough love left to become a hero and shine a light back into mine".
Unfortunately Ciarán went into chronic rejection in August 2013 and thus ensued a long and courageous battle after he was placed back on the transplant list in January 2014; and cruelly he became too ill to go through the transplant before a donor could be found, leaving his family and friends absolutely devastated and heart broken. Ciarán didn't want to die, he had so much more to live for and we his family will ensure his legacy lives on in many many ways.
The word INSPIRATION epitomises everything Ciarán was and the legacy he has left behind. Money from your donations will go to the CF Trust to help research into a cure and also develop the process for allocation on donor lungs; both of which were too late for Ciarán.
Please take 2 minutes to register your wishes to donate your organs, just look at the amazing 4 years Ciarán got out of his transplant; to us relatively healthy people 4 years might not seem that long but for Ciarán it was a LIFETIME!
There has been a number of events in Ciarán's memory over Spring/Summer 2015. On the 4th May 2015 three teams of runners took part in Belfast City Marathon. Team 1 was a group of friends from Claire's work - Amy T, Amy W, Breandan, Marie, Malachy, Nikki, Sinead & Taylor. Team 2 was Deirdre, Josephine, Cora, Aodhán, Conrad and Caoimhe and Team 3 , Deirdre's cousin Maire and husband Martin along with Laura, Eoin and Ashling. All running in memory of Ciarán and 'running' the same course that Ciarán took part in nearly a year to the day of his transplant...Ciaran's Flyers lives on.
In September Ciaran's ex school friends remembered him at their 10 year school reunion night. A night full of heartfelt tributes to Ciarán and stories from his days at St Malachy's College.
On 3rd October Ciarán's Uncle Gerry and cousins Darragh and Christopher completed the "FEAR Managh", a cycle, run and canoe endurance event in County Fermanagh. This year Christopher pipped Darragh for the Ciaran Murphy Award. Please consider sponsoring them through these pages. Thank you.
Ciarán's Uncle Gerry who rows with Portora Rowing Club has this week received a cheque for £1,000 from the club. We creep ever closer to having raised £10,000 in Ciaran's memory. Conrad's work colleagues have organised an event in Ciaran's memory on 5th November after which we should more than meet the £10,000 figure. What a testament to his legacy in such a short time.
BREATHE EASY CIARÁN
