What?

The Steve Prescott Foundation are taking a team to Everest Base camp and the summit of Kala Pattar to raise as much funds and awareness as possible and to continue the legacy of a great man. Steve’s wife and youngest son will be part of the team heading up the mountain.

This will be a massive physical challenge for our small team; encompassing a 16 day trek at significant altitude to reach and return from our target of the Everest Base Camp in the Himalaya mountain range.

Who?

My name is Chris Walker and I'm taking on this challenge to raise much needed funds for this fantastic charity and also to try to raise awareness.

Cancer has had a massive impact on not only my family but that of my close friends. Raising funds for treatment, research or to provide support to those families battling against cancer is massively needed.

My dad (Alan Walker) passed away after an intense battle against Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. The impact on our family has been enormous and despite the passing years the massive hole left by dad’s sudden death will never be filled. 63 is too young an age to pass. Cancer does not discriminate and unfortunately can impact anyone at anytime. This is something The Christie is looking to change through science, research and action.

The Christie are the largest single site cancer centre in Europe, treating more than 44,000 patients a year. The money donated by The Steve Prescott Foundation goes to Pseudomyxoma Research. So far the SPF have donated in excess half a million pounds.

The Christie are also the first UK centre to be officially accredited as a comprehensive cancer centre. As part of the NHS they provide:

• Radiotherapy, in one of the world's largest radiotherapy departments and at our satellite radiotherapy centres in Oldham and Salford
• Chemotherapy, in the UK's largest chemotherapy unit, as well as via 10 other sites, a mobile chemotherapy unit and in patients’ homes
• Highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer. 
• A wide range of support and diagnostic services

The Christie are a national cancer specialist based in Manchester, They serve a population of 3.2 million people across the North West while 26% of our patients are referred to us from across the UK.

They have an annual turnover of £230 million, operating with 2,500 staff, 300 volunteers, 30,000 public members and one of the largest hospital charities in the UK. The Christie has been named, by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), as one of the best hospitals providing opportunities for patients to take part in clinical research studies.

The Christie has one of the largest trials portfolios in the UK, with over 550 active clinical trials.

They are part of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre working with The University of Manchester and Cancer Research UK. We are also one of seven partners in the Manchester Academic Health Science Research Centre.

The RFL Benevolent Fund is a charity that provides assistance to players, and the family of players who have suffered life-changing injuries playing Rugby League.

The sport is safer now than at any time in its history but sadly, as with all contact sports, accidents do happen. And when they do, the Benevolent Fund is there to offer lifelong support.

The charity has 20 former players on its full-time register and each year works with around 40 other people who have experienced serious injuries playing the game they love.

Like all charities, the RFL Benevolent Fund is heavily reliant on  the fundraising activities of individuals and organisations
