First of all THANK YOU for visiting my page! I know we are all inundated with requests from friends and colleagues who are doing some bonkers challenge to raise money for one charity or another. I can’t promise that my story is that different (except I don’t think I’m bonkers…) but now that you are here please read on and decide for yourself.
Despite a lack of swimming and cycling ability and tendency to running-induced injury, I decided that trying a triathlon would be a good idea. I've always liked a challenge.
But rather than just setting myself personal challenge, I wanted training for and completing my first triathlon to benefit others in some way. However, there are so many worthy causes out there, it was difficult to know where to start selecting one to support. The prospect of the physical training was much more straightforward! As long as I couldn’t quite decide on a charity or event, I could put off the triathlon idea, secretly hoping I’d see sense and forget the whole thing….
Then I heard about Tri for Life and I knew I had to stop boring everyone about maybe doing a triathlon and enter the event. All Tri for Life competitors have to raise at least £200 for the event’s chosen charities; Whizz-Kidz, Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Great Ormond Street Children’s Charity and Rays of Sunshine. I'm sure you'll agree that these are fantastic charities and that like me, you'll have friends or family who have directly benefited from their work.
So I have been training for about 8 weeks now. I was feeling particularly inspired by the Olympics and I'm hoping to beat the women's triathlon event winning time.... although my chosen triathlon is considerably shorter (but still ambitious enough for me)! I'll be swimming 400m in a lake before taking on a 20km bike course and 5km run, all in the grounds of Woburn Abbey, on 15 September.
My story might not be that unusual but I hope if nothing else, you’ll agree that the Tri for Life charities are worthy of my physical and your financial support. Please give generously and I promise that I’ll continue to give it my all during my training and on the day!
