Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Peter Long was a smashing friend to both me and my husband, Chris. Chris and I have spent wonderful times together with Bridget and Peter. Together we visited archaeological sites in Greece and Italy and savoured the warmth of the Mediterranean, their culture, food, and wine. And on each expedition we had our own, personal, Oxford educated, Classics tour guide: Peter. We would wander through historic sites with Peter verbally painting vivid pictures of life as it was in XxX BC and XxX AD. Peter had a magical gift of bringing history alive with words and often hilarious re-enactment.
Peter taught me the intricacies of the game of golf. I wish I had paid more attention. He had patience and was a smashing teacher. With thwacks, clonks, thuds and spitting lumps of turf my balls would hiccup their way down the fairway. Peter would follow. With superb tolerance Peter would mark my ball on the ground and then delicately raise the ball to eye level. Upon inspection Peter would roll his eyes and, with a deep sigh and a heavy, dramatic slump of his shoulders, he would withdraw a crumpled handkerchief from his trouser pocket. With the delicate persona of a comfortable, old, headmaster who was addressing a first year student, Peter would use his handkerchief to wipe the ball clean of encrusted mud whilst asking: "and tell me again what happens when the dimples of a golf ball are caked in mud?"
He was a great sport, a great friend, and a great man and, like many others, Peter was helped in his final days by the Garden House Hospice.
