Martin David Chard

By taking part in the St Peter’s Hospice Bristol Three Peaks Challenge (not to be confused with something really difficult!) I am hoping to raise money for the Hospice in memory of my late husband, Martin Chard, who passed away last October, aged just 60.

Martin had chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (“CIDP”) for several years but did not let that get him down. Then, a few years ago he was diagnosed with a low grade lymphoma. Naively, we just thought/hoped that it would stay in the background and never rear its ugly head, but it did.  Sadly, the low grade lymphoma became more aggressive and Martin spent several months in hospital but eventually, after getting an infection, there was nothing more that could be done and he was sent home to spend his final days with his family.

In the end, the pain for him was all consuming and he was transferred to St Peter’s Hospice in Brentry where the caring staff helped control his pain. After a week there, Martin passed away: we hope pain free but we were/are absolutely devastated. Too young, too soon; his family left without an amazing man.

St Peter’s provides a fantastic, caring environment for both patients and families and I hope by raising awareness and money for it, we can ensure that they continue to offer support for others in very trying times.
