Peak District Ultra (100km) & Everest Base Camp · 18 April 2020
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
A minor hiccup in my planned adventures due to Covid-19 which has grounded the entire world. I am disappointed obviously that I won't be beginning my trek from Lukla up Everest next Sunday as expected, but I'm delighted that I will be able to see a rejuvenated Mountain, after a season of rest in May 2021. My 100km Lake District Challenge is similarly on hold until 2021. In the meantime its back to the garden for the 100 a day squat challenge, and a few laps of my glorified paddling pool while tethered to the fence - Covid-19 you are not stopping me!
During a trip to see my daughter in Bali in January, I was encouraged to take part in a trek up Mt Batur (a live volcano). I've never liked hills (my triathlete friends will tell you that), probably why I liked swimming! I'd also had a couple of 'off years', feeling very fatigued, my body just hurting 24/7 so had done little training. I started and cheated the final stretch by hopping on the back of a motorbike to get me to the top (that was another experience!).
Disappointed with myself I decided I had to get over these hills (literally). After a glass of prosecco I booked Mt Snowdon (for sunrise!) in April. I also booked an Ultra Challenge in the Peak District. 100km with 2450m ascent in one day!!
Things snowballed and I then found myself booking an a 16 day trek to Everest Basecamp - 12 days up and 4 down (or thereabouts), almost 5,500m ascent and altitude to conquer. This is in April so I definitely need to crack on once my legs have recovered from PDC.
As part of my training I participated in the Ingleborough Challenge, organised by the Cave Rescue Organisation - I knew little about this small charity until then - the event was fab, the team organising were very supportive and organised. I added to their facebook page and soon became aware of the work they did in the Yorkshire Dales. A team of volunteers who rescued folk from the hills, and not just from within them them - also important of course. I have a lot of local friends who enjoy training in the Dales - the work of the CRO is invaluable and I decided I would like to do what I can to give back and support them.
Training hasn't been great this last month so the Ultra will be what it will be - realistically I intend to get 75% there, and with your help who knows I might even manage it all! That said I've put in a few hours of work, done a few 22 mile walks (bit different from 62 lol!) and self fund all my events. (I've really got to stop drinking prosecco, haha).
Please donate generously, and wish me luck for PDC next Saturday - hopefully I will be somewhere near the end by 10am Sunday morning!
