Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On September 27th 2011 my friend Sally's world fell apart. Her youngest son Richard was diagnosed with Leukaemia. The next day on September 28th 2011 he died having only had one day to understand what was wrong. He was 20 years & 12 days old. Sally and her family were and still are absolutely devastated.

Richard was studying Education and Sport at Bishop Grossetteste University in Lincoln. Richard had a fantastic sense of humour and was awarded the 'King of Banter' certificate whilst at uni. As well as being the precious son of Sally and Tony he was also a much loved brother to Tom and a very loved boyfriend of Amy. On July 23rd this year Richard was to proudly stand as best man at his brother's wedding to Emily. Tony, Thomas and Richards dad, is now to take on this very important role. Am sure it will be a happy celebration for Thomas and Emily but there will be an aching sadness on the day as they remember Richard and his missing presence. Am sure though he will be there watching over them and checking Tony is carrying out the role of best man in the best way he can.

Richard was a huge Grimsby Town Fan, he was also a Trumpeteer for the GTFC supporters band. In his memory a plaque has been placed on the Pontoon Gates of the grounds. He definately will never be forgotten.

Unfortunately I never got the chance to meet Richard, however after talking to Sally and others who knew him he was definately a fantastic son, brother, boyfriend and friend that once met would leave a huge impact on your life - just like his mum Sally.

Most days at work I pop along the corridor to see Sally and check she is ok and give her a big hug to help her along with the day. Of course Sally will always say 'Hi Chris, yeah am fine' but behind her eyes you can see so much sadness, so much hurt, how do you ever come to terms with being told one day your son has Leukaemia and the next day he has gone! Sally is such a nice person, she gives the biggest cuddliest cuddles and is one of the strongest people I know. Many a day we share a tear, share a cuddle. For Sally just knowing people care helps her get through the day.

On September 16th I am running this years Great North Run in memory or Richard. This should of been Richards 21st birthday. Sally and her family will be there too as there are others running in Richard's memory for Leukaemia & Lymphoma and to mark Richards 21st birthday.

Any donation however small that anyone can give really will be appreciated and will spur me on with this challenge once again to run the gruelling 13.1 miles !! By me doing this for Sally, it will never bring Richard back but it may help to mending the huge hole in Sally's heart.

Thank you for taking the time to read my page.
