Story

2020 and 2021 have brought experiences like no other we have known in living memory. We had all hoped that 2020 would bring an end to the covid pandemic, but it didn't, and the covid infection is still very present today still in 2021.

Among all the difficult times of lock down, social distancing, and restrictions on movements and gatherings, we have moments of
thanks for what is precious to us: our freedom, feeling safe, friends,
family, closeness, a hug or a smile. Thinking of what we have lost, helps us appreciate the life we have. These moments of reflecting on what has changed over the past 20 months, helps bring thoughts of how others have made great sacrifices for us.

As Remembrance Day approaches, it is clear that these years 20-21 have great significance. On Remembrance Day we reflect
on the sacrifices made in war. We usually think of this being in war
zones,  and the battle lines are usually in countries far away from
home. This year we especially remember the conflicts across the world, including Syria, Myanmar and Afghanistan.  But in the past 20 months the COVID-19 health war has been felt here on our home soil by everyone, in our own homes, as we have been separated from family and friends, school and work places.

This Remembrance Day 2021 we not only think of the armed services, but also of the key workers who keep our country going, such as the shops, delivery drivers, transport, teachers. The key workers  helped us while the country was in lockdown or under social and travel restrictions. Especially we thank the health workers and carers in
the NHS who have been heroically fighting on the front line of this COVID-19 health war. And in 2021 the NHS has been working even harder setting up covid testing and immunisation sites.

The poppy display in front of Christchurch, on The Grove, Ilkley has been made by a large number of volunteers and friends of Christchurch, to show our thanks to the armed forces and to all
the key workers who have made sacrifices, and died in this
COVID-19 pandemic. The display for 2021 continues the theme of 2020, and consists of both red, and blue poppies. The blue poppy is based on the blue and white colours of the NHS logo. While the traditional red poppies help us remember the service of the armed forces, the blue poppies are to help us remember and thank the service of all key workers.

If you can, please make a donation to the NHS Charities Together. Through its 241 member charities across the UK, donations will improve services for patients and support NHS staff to continue their vital work. Donations are especially needed now to support NHS staff and volunteers as they cope with the stresses of the covid19 pandemic. Any donation goes directly to the charity, and if you can, please gift aid the donation.
