Peter was 12 when a mole he had removed, which was being irritated by his shirt collar, was found to be a melanoma. It was a huge suprise to all and being a deep melanoma had already spread to the surrounding tissues.
Despite major surgery at Great Ormond Street and later Alder Hay, by the age of 13 it had spread to both lungs, by 14 he had exhausted conventional treatments and so poorly that he was unable to eat so much as a whole fish finger.
After referral to Dr Lorigan at the Christie who was able to secure a very new drug, within 36 hours of starting treatment the symptoms had diminished and Pete was able to come home. Now 15 he is still not well trying numerous drugs and the family are spending their time in and out of hospital.
Peter is fully aware that he wouldn't be enjoying his time now if it wasn't for the Christie. He says "I was very lucky but not everyone has the same chance as I did!"
