Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In the UK over 9000 people a year get a stoma formed. This operation saves lives, but it also changes them. A stoma is formed when the large bowel is removed, a part of the small intestine is passed through the abdomen and waste is collected is an external bag. There is a lot to adjust to, and get to know about. New daily routines, challenges and things to remember.
In 2015 I had my diagnosis of a rare bowel condition which without surgery had a 100% chance of becoming cancer. My late diagnosis meant that they feared that unless surgery was soon, i would not live more than a year.
I was very lucky to have friends and family who supported and at times carried me through a difficult and scary time before and after the operation. Not everyone is so lucky though, this is where the Ileostomy Association come in.
They arrange visits and support for people struggling with this change. Support on everything from the stoma itself, to the effect on relationships, mental health, finances and more.
In June I will be starting out on a 5 day trek of 100 miles through the Scottish Highlands from Milngavie to Fort William, crossing a huge variety of scenery along the way, from countryside parks to loch-shores and open moorlands to steep mountains.
I will be doing this as a solo, self sufficient trek, carrying everything I need from food and shelter to emergency kit and clothing and of course my stoma supplies!
This trip is no mean feat with or without a stoma, there are just a few extra things we need along the way.
I hope to show with this trip that a stoma doesn't limit us, or stop us from doing anything that someone without a stoma would do. To raise awareness of people that are living with stomas.
To raise as much money as we can to support the great work the IA do in supporting others.
