I am taking part in this event to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Oxford. This charity means a lot to me and Tracy. As most of you will know Jack was born with a rare genetic condition called Apert Syndrome in 2015. Due to his condition he has had to have numerous operations at the children's hospital in Oxford.
The Ronald McDonald house in the hospital at Oxford has provided us a place to stay while Jack has had surgery and has meant we can stay together as a family. The hospital isn't close to home for us, so being able to stay at there means that we can both stay close to Jack while he's having surgery and recovering. It's also a place for us to go and rest while Jack is having his surgery rather than spending several hours on the hospital ward pacing! It really is a home away from home.
Thankfully Jack's hospital stays haven't been too long so far (longest was 2 weeks when he was 3 months old) but for some families with sick children their stays in the house can be weeks, or even months.
The accommodation is provided free of charge and for as long as families need it, giving them the chance to remain close to their child whilst they are in hospital. Their location, as close as possible to one of fourteen specialist children's hospitals across the UK, means that families can be by their child's bedside in a matter of moments, whilst maintaining a degree of normal life and reducing emotional and financial strain.
