April 2014 update:
I completed the 2014 London Marathon in 3 hours 51 minutes on 13th April, made possible by the support, entertainment, food and drink provided by the wonderful crowd at every point of the route.
Thank you to everyone who has so generously sponsored me, helping St John to raise more than 150k on the day, which will pay for a great deal of first aid training and emergency support.
Particular thanks to the many branches of the Millward, O'Brien and Wakelin families, current and former colleagues at HEFCE and AHRC, parents and children at the Widcombe Infant and Junior Schools, friends going back to Warwick and Edinburgh, neighbours in Bearflat, musicians of the BSO, fellow sufferers from the Etihad Stadium, and Derek and Philippa's anniversary crowd.

Thanks for visiting my fund-raising page.
I will be running the London Marathon in April 2014 to raise money for St John Ambulance. St John say that their first aid training makes sure more people can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.
This is absolutely true in my case. In June 2012, just after my 40th birthday, I suffered a cardiac arrest whilst out shopping with my partner Emma and children Sam and Flora. I am alive today due to the presence of mind and first aid skills of staff in the shop, who conducted CPR until paramedics arrived, using training they received from St John years earlier.
I am also indebted to the expertise of staff in the RUH in Bath and the Bristol Heart Institute, who cared for me during the following weeks, and the researchers supported by the UK government, the British Heart Foundation and others, whose work underpins this treatment and care.
So, if you would like to ensure that more people like me survive, and that families like mine continue to thrive, please support me on my run, or others raising money for the British Heart Foundation or NHS hospitals around the country.
