Story
As 2013 is my 50th year I'm marking it by completing a series of events,e.g. Parbold Hill Race (Feb - DONE!), Liverpool Half Marathon (March - DONE!), Southport Triathlon (June - DONE!), Wirral Way Cycle (June - DONE!), White Rose Classic cycle (July - DONE!) and Chester Marathon (October), some of which are familiar, but others representing new challenges. To make this really worthwhile I'm using this to raise much-needed funds for Hospice Africa which happens to be celebrating its 20th anniversay this year.
Based in Kampala, Uganda, Hospice Africa was founded by my cousin Dr. Anne Merriman. Hospice Africa provides palliative (end of life) care to patients suffering from AIDs and cancer and helps them live and die completely free from pain. Since its founding in 1993 it has grown to be the largest provider of Palliative care in the whole of Africa.
£1500 is my target as this is what it costs to fully train a palliative care nurse. Once qualified, the salary of Hospice Africa nurses is paid by the Ugandan government.
