Story
Thank you for reading my JustGiving webpage!
I had major spinal surgery 27 years ago with very painful movement before and restricted movement after surgery so I can speak from some experience as to how incapacitating and incredibly painful a spinal cord injury can be. Thankfully I was only incapacitated in all for about 6 months and since made a full recovery. A large part of my recovery revolved around swimming and I have swum as often as possible ever since. This aided my recovery from subsequent surgery on both knees and up until this Challenge I had been averaging 4-5 miles every week.
Its a sobering thought but every eight hours someone is paralysed by a Spinal Cord Injury and thankfully Aspire provides essential equipment, advice, housing and grants that spinal cord injured people need to live their lives independently.
So I've been taking on the Aspire Channel Swim 2017. I originally intended to swim open air the distance of the Channel and back + 3 miles extra each way to take account of tidal movements over the allotted 12 weeks to raise money for Aspire and this very worthwhile cause. However, by the end of week 9, I had swum 58.42 miles.
Due to what now appears to be a multiple disc compression issue affecting various nerve roots, this has put an end to my Challenge. I'm thankful for all of the support i was afforded.
Also, on behalf of Aspire -Thank you so much!!!
