Story
I am running the London Marathon on October 3rd in memory of my brother-in-law, Jon, and for my two nieces who have suffered so much heartache and loss at such an early age.
Severe or fatal heart attacks in adults under 50 are more common than you think. Sadly, my family has had to confront that reality twice in 9 years.
In 2012, aged 39, my sister had a spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) which triggered a near fatal heart attack. SCAD is a rare heart condition that occurs suddenly with no apparent warning. It is most common in women under the age of 50. The condition can’t currently be predicted or prevented. The event was traumatising for us all but especially for her husband Jon and their two young daughters. Thankfully she survived, but the emotional and physiological impacts have stayed long after the event.
Then, on October 6th 2019, Jon died of a sudden heart attack aged 47. Being fit and healthy, he was the last person you would expect to have a heart attack. His loss has been devastating. Jon was much loved: kind, funny, thoughtful and devoted to his family.
Your support will help me get through the 26 miles but, more importantly, it will help BHF fund vital research and provide support that can help mend broken hearts.
