On 26th and 27th April 2019 I will be joining Around The World Cycling Record Holder, Mark Beaumont, by cycling 265 miles in 2 days. Our cycle will start in Dundee at Tayside Children’s Hospital taking us north on day 1 up to The Highland Children’s Unit in Inverness. On day 2 we will head south and make our way back to the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital. Over a formidable distance and difficult terrain this will be a difficult challenge but also one I relish in such esteemed company who has previously circumnavigated the planet on two wheels in 78 days 14 hours and 40 minutes.
All money raised from ARCHIE and Mark's Big Bike Ride will go to The ARCHIE Foundation's "Emergency Funding".
Sadly, many parents that have a child unexpectedly admitted to hospital often find themselves facing financial pressure. This can lead to families being apart for long periods of time, losing their homes, or in extreme cases, living in poverty.
Often a parent must take unpaid leave from work to stay with their child while the other parent may have to do the same in order to look after siblings and/or travel back and forth to the hospital. This can quickly result in families facing financial crisis. Emergency Funding can alleviate their stress and give them one less thing to worry about, allowing them to focus their attention on the most important thing: their child's recovery.
If a child is transferred unexpectedly to a different hospital, Emergency Funding can also support parents that can't afford to travel there, or in the case that the hospital can't offer accommodation. Sometimes this could be as far as London or even abroad for specialist care.
To some families, Emergency Funding can mean the world. With your help, we can continue to offer this invaluable service and ultimately ease the experience of hospital for local sick children and their families.
