Story
For the first time in history I will be travelling from John O Groats to the other end of the country – Lands End, travelling just by public transport and using a wheelchair, for four days, to raise awareness about access issues.
My name is Chris Button, I have a learning disability, I was born 8th March 1951, I have lived in Worthing for over thirty years.
I have planned this trip independently and I am going to be doing it on my own. I have chosen to do this trip using a wheelchair, because nobody has done this particular challenge before to my knowledge, using buses and trains. I campaign for transport to be more accessible with my self-advocacy group Worthing Speakabout – I hope my trip will raise staff awareness about the need for transport and hotels to be accessible for people with disabilities.
I will also be filming the challenge!
I will be collecting sponsorship to raise money for Worthing Speakabout. Worthing Speakabout is a self-advocacy group for people with learning disabilities that I’m part of. The group helps us to have our voice heard – speak up, complain and access our rights - we need to raise funds to pay our rent and meet.
