Individuals are a huge source of innovation. I have seen many characterful young people  become valuable, valued and respected members of society. Fame and status are not the be all and end all. I would like to think that Elaine and I have encouraged some of this success usually from behind the scenes and we take great pride in the respect many have shown us. Individuality and enterprise must be encouraged - if we are unable to lead we can always support.
 Many of our brightest talents can be seen to take to the safer shelter of large well-funded organisations. Sadly some of these choose to direct much of this valuable funding to support corporate profit or socially divisive agendas.
I celebrate the enterprise and initiative that can come from funders promoting those willing to go out on a limb, take on really difficult challenges, direct their creativity to alternatives and follow their dreams.
The Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund (PFRC), a small charity, does exactly this. All funds go directly into research projects and have already led to groundbreaking discoveries including research with the potential to be the world’s first test to detect pancreatic cancer when it is still in its earliest stages and DNA detection through blood tests rather than intrusive biopsies.
