Story
Hi! I’m running a 10k. Holy hell. I’m nervous already and I’m six months away!
I’m no runner. I always hated outdoor exercise and I could never see myself doing this- I can’t believe what I’ve just signed myself up for. There is a reason for all of this nonsense though, I promise!
In the spring and summer of 2020, I had a bad mental health “episode” that really ground me down til I was in the worst place I’ve ever been. The combined effects of the pandemic, living alone, a recent-ish breakup, isolation, uncertainty, and constant worries about the safety of those I love completely sent me a bit, well, weird. It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever experienced and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.
In the summer and autumn, I thankfully was feeling better. I had called my gp and had a course of CBT, and I’m now due another course of higher intensity CBT. I ate better, drank less, lost weight, took my medication, slept more, drank more water, and started running. I did my first Couch to 5k run on 6 September 2020 and fell in love with running. I now run 4-5k, 3 times a week, and it’s really helped me. Now I’m at the end of the CT5K plan I need a new challenge.
After the absolute rollercoaster that has been 2020, and knowing how fundamental running has been in my recovery, I really wanted to set myself a running challenge and do it in the name of fundraising for a mental health charity. This is a testament to everything I’ve achieved and I’m so proud of myself. I’m excited to embrace the next step and hoping we can raise some money for Mind, who provide valuable support to those who need it most.
If you can donate anything, no matter how much, I would be so grateful. Thank you so much!
