Story
My Cause:
I'm running the Edinburgh Marathon in memory of my grandma, who passed away from Alzheimer's Disease in 2019. I signed up to run this race in 2020, to raise money for Alzheimer's Society, but Covid delayed those plans until this year. I'm looking forward to running the race this year and remembering my grandma.
Your donation will go to a charity that simultaneously funds research for a cure and provides support to those affected by the disease. Thank you so much for supporting this wonderful charity, and for helping me make my first marathon meaningful.
About Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's Society:
There are an estimated 46.8 million people living with dementia and the numbers affected will double every 20 years. There is no cure for Alzheimer's disease or any other type of dementia. Delaying the onset of dementia by five years would halve the number of deaths from the condition, saving 30,000 lives a year.
Dementia research is desperately underfunded and there are not enough researchers and clinicians joining the fight against dementia. Five times fewer researchers choose to work on dementia than on cancer.
Alzheimer's Society is committed to spending at least £150 million over the next decade on dementia research to improve care for people today and find a cure for tomorrow. This includes £50 million to develop the UK’s first dedicated Dementia Research Institute.
For every £1 of expenditure, 89p is spent on improving the lives of people with dementia. The remaining 11p is spent on supporting frontline activities.
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
