Story
When Graham "Fuzz" Fairs, at the age of 76, was diagnosed with cancer over 12 months ago it was a shock and he tried to find ways to handle this life changing event. As a regular player of walking football at Hasland, he decided that to keep playing and stay active should help. He set himself the target of playing walking football for 52 consecutive weeks and he achieved 53 weeks!
Unfortunately, Graham passed away on the 28th of March.
During his last year Fuzz did not missed a playing session, despite repeated visits to Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield and the Royal Chesterfield Hospital at Calow for treatment. He remained positive and optimistic and wanted people to know that if you stay active and have a regular interest like he did, then cancer can be coped with. He even turned out in the snow playing at Dronfield after the session at Hasland was cancelled.
He said “Going to Hasland every week has given me something to look forward to. The treatment has taken it out of me but it doesn’t stop me playing footy. If anybody else is in this situation, I would say “don’t sit around feeling sorry for yourself, get up and do something active”
To raise funds for the two hospitals where Graham had his treatment there were two special “Fuzz Footy Sessions” in late March where members of the Club made charity donations to these very important local NHS hospitals.
Fuzz is also to be featured in the April issue of the Hasland local community magazine which hopefully will raise more funds for his nominated charities.
