After a particularly long episode of depression and anxiety, I find myself ready to begin the next stage of my journey of recovery. Although it's a struggle most days even to get out of the house, I wanted to set myself a challenge which could benefit me in the short-term and long-term. My goals?
To do something worthwhile and meaningful to me to regain a sense of purpose.
To increase my level of fitness and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression through exercise.
Let's be clear, I DON'T LIKE RUNNING, I never have and probably never will. Whilst I'm capable of walking the 13 miles, actually to run it is the real challenge for me.
The Great North Air Ambulance Service is a charity worthy of such efforts. I have watched repeatedly as they have flown into the hospital where I used to work. Each time it brought in someone seriously unwell who almost certainly would have died without it.
Also, as a once, keen hillwalker, often out in remote places on some of the finest high ground in the North of Britain, I have seen their green and white helicopters fly over to rescue some unfortunate soul whose hill top adventures have taken a turn for the worse.
Simple fact is, they save lives. The doctors and paramedics on board are highly skilled professionals trained for the most serious, complex health emergencies. NHS Emergency Ambulance services on the ground rely on them to ensure a seriously injured or unwell person is given the best chance of survival when time is of the essence to reach hospital.
This essential service receives no Government funding and relies solely on donations from members of the public and corporate sponsorship. You can find out more about what they do by visiting their website, links below.
