Story

Back in May earlier this year, my life changed for ever after being diagnosed with aggressive bi-lateral multi-focal breast cancer at the age of just 36.  As my treatment has progressed, the initial shock, anger and disbelief have gradually been replaced with an unexpected sense of optimism and a desire to do something to help others in a similar situation.

I have spent my life trying to help others in the best way that I could; through my work as a water specialist.  This has ranged from research into low cost alternative treatment technologies, working for Oxfam in post-war Rwanda, to working for Thames Water and now Yorkshire Water, who support me as a Volunteer Speaker for WaterAid in my free time.  Perhaps all of this has left me with a feeling that I know I am still luckier than many in the world?

I had already secured my place as a WaterAid runner in the GNR 2006 last year.  When I first received my diagnosis it was one of the few things that I clung to, telling myself that I will run that race in October and I will get through this.  Of course everyone thinks I'm mad!

It's now over 3 months since major surgery and I am currently undergoing chemotherapy.  I should be in bed resting, not running!  However, my husband John will tell you I'm a stubborn old so-and-so.....

My friends, family, work colleagues and the staff at Airedale Hospital have been truly amazing and supportive through such a traumatic time.  My thanks go out to them all.  It is vital that we do all we can to ensure the patient care, treatment and prevention of cancer remains a priority.  More and more young people are being diagnosed and it's always someone else...until it's you.

As a dedicated WaterAid supporter I pledged to raise at least £300 for WaterAid when I volunteered to run last year, but they have been extremely kind to allow me to also raise money for the specialist cancer units at Airedale Hospital.  If you would like to donate towards Airedale, please contact me directly.

Please note: All donations made via this website will go directly to WaterAid.

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: WaterAid will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your support.

Jo  (& John - my husband, moral supporter and rescuer!)
