Story
Back in May, when I had just finished my first-year at university, I decided to apply to become a support worker at St Michael's, Leonard Cheshire. The home is resident to 36 individuals, all with physical disabilities. These disabilities are the result of conditions such as Huntington's, Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI), Spinal Injuries (SI) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS), to name a few. I noticed very quickly that although two residents may suffer from the same condition, it presents itself very differently in each and every person. We are all so different; we all have a different story to tell, different perspectives on things and different ways we like to do things. And although at times this is the hardest part of the job, it's also the most rewarding.
It has been a privilege working alongside all the staff at St Michael's to support all the wonderful residents at the home. It was heart-breaking to lose a resident this summer to Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
This summer also, I have worked as a personal carer for a wonderful lady diagnosed with MS 22 years ago. All the care delivered to her is done so at her own home. Because of this, I have really grown to know this lady, who once was a stranger and is now a so-called friend. Her and her husband have both taught me so much, I don't think they realise quite how amazing they both are! I want to thank her and her husband for welcoming me with such open arms, it has been my absolute pleasure caring for you this summer.
And this is why I am walking 20km this September for MS. I want to pay tribute to all those diagnosed with MS. You are all amazing!
Please join mum and I on Sunday 5th September 2021. You don't have to walk the entire 20km, you can choose a distance to suit you, either 1, 5 or 10km. We'd love to see you there!
Any donations would be hugely appreciated. The aim is to reach £100. This would mean we could support 20 calls to the MS helpline for those that need it the most.
Thank you for visiting my page!
