Story
My name is Charlotte Wilson and Autism has touched both my personal and professional life for the past 22 years.
I am a specialist speech and language therapist. I work almost exclusively with students with a diagnosis of Autism. My students excite, interest and occasionally frustrate me! They never, ever bore me!! I love my job. In fact, I am one of the boring ones because I never shut up about it!
Fifteen years ago, on the first of the two most amazing days of my life (the other being when my daughter was born), Felix was born.
He was reluctant to leave the womb - looking back an early indicator of his difficulty transitioning maybe! However, when he arrived he was the most beautiful, calm, wonderful baby.
He was always unusual; while other children were playing with Lego, Felix would categorise the farm animals. While other children were looking at picture books, Felix was learning dinosaur facts. And, while other children were listening to One Direction, Felix was memorising Pi!
It wasn't until he was 12 that Felix received a formal diagnosis of Aspergers (now known as High functioning Autism), but I had known for years!
In recognition of the many, many remarkable people that I have met with autism I am embarking on a challenge for 2016:
I plan to run:
- 20 10k races
- 1 marathon
- 6 half marathons
