Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Dementia UK is a charity close to both of our hearts and our families, with us both having family members suffering with Dementia / Alzheimer’s and also losing members to the illness. We want to raise as much awareness to Dementia as possible, to help support the family members currently doing all they can to care or grieve for their loved ones. On Wednesday 5th May we will be taking on our first fundraising event, where we will be walking a marathon following the London Marathon route in just one day. Any donations or sharing of our page we will be entirely grateful for. We are so excited to make a difference and raise further awareness on this heartbreaking disease.
Here’s some more info on our individual stories:
Charlotte’s Story:
Dementia is a tough subject for me, I’ve struggled to contain my emotion around the disease for some time now. From the age of 10 I had just one grandparent left, my Nanny Ivy. Sadly, at this point my nan was aged 88/89 and had already started developing early symptoms of dementia. For years I watched my nan suffer with dementia, trapped in her own mind, until she passed away in January 2021 at the age of 100 years old. From forgetting to turn the oven off, forgetting our names and getting lost, it quite quickly progressed more seriously. Sadly, my nan no longer recognised me, our memories shared together were only remembered by me and my nans story telling came to an end. As a grandchild this was painful, I adored my nan and I still do, she was my hero. I understand how difficult it is to care for loved ones suffering with dementia, especially when they begin to resent you. But you still love them so much and you know they don’t mean it, you just keep fighting for them. I want family members to gain as much support possible to help them through, what can be a very long and heartbreaking time for them.
Katie’s story:
Sadly, Dementia has affected my family and those closest to me in more ways than one. Seeing the people I love the most struggling with having the disease and supporting those with the disease is the most heartbreaking thing. I became aware of the impacts of dementia from a young age as my great nanny was living with it. Unfortunately the only memories I have of my lovely Nan, is her having dementia and seeing her change every time I saw her , and seeing people around her suffering from the same disease as she lived in a specialist home. A few years ago, my grandad was also diagnosed with dementia. Even though he is still at the early stages, which we are so grateful for , we have already seen major changes and we only worry for the future. Over the past few years I have become more and more aware of what dementia and Alzheimer’s is and what it means for many families. I would love to spread awareness for this heartbreaking disease.
Thank you for supporting us. We hope to do our loved ones and your loved ones proud xxx
