Southampton ABP Half Marathon
Charlotte Butler is raising money for Abby's Heroes
Story
On Sunday 5th May 2019 myself and my amazing friends will be taking part in Southampton Half Marathon & 10k.
We will be running for the local charity Abby’s Heroes. They help and support children, young adults and their families during and after their diagnosis of cancer including bereaved families, who come under the care of either Piam Brown ward or TYA (Teenager & Young Adult) Ward’s at Southampton General Hospital. As a charity they provide practical and financial support and help with the important precious family time and making memories.
Abby was a beautiful young girl that I met in 2015 on the Piam Brown Ward when my son Alfie was also diagnosed with cancer in his brain, he was 8 months old.
After Alfie’s initial surgery to remove his brain tumour he then endured 9 months of chemotherapy of which the first 6 months of this he spent living on the Piam Brown Ward before he could finally go back home again. These were some of the darkest days of our life, being thrown into a world we knew nothing about and being part of a club we didn’t ever want to join.
However, through all this heartache one person made hospital life much more bearable, Abby.
Abby had been fighting cancer for a while but despite her own health complications she had the most beautiful infectious smile and always managed to brighten up children on the ward. She lit up any room she was in and had so much positive energy. Alfie loved spending time with her at hospital.
Sadly Abby lost her battle to cancer in 2016. Somehow through all the heartache her Mum Sally managed to find the strength to set up Abby’s Heroes in her Legacy.
After having 2.5 years cancer free, sadly Alfie relapsed in July 2018 and is now on palliative care. We don’t know what the future holds for him so we make as many memories as we can and enjoy life with him everyday.
This event will be a massive challenge for us so please help us get over that finishing line by donating to such a worthy cause as we will need all the encouragement we can get!
